clunking in rear end, what is this? 200 1984

1984 245ti, as i come to a stop just as i am about to be fully stopped and am rolling slightly i experience a clunking noise from my rear end, clunk...clunk..clunk clunk clunkclunk, im not sure what this is, and hope its not my diff. it could be coming from the the driveshaft, but ive tried slowing to a stop with driveshaft at a standstill and the noise persists. my best guess is that maybe therear end is so worn out that the diff is clunking against the rear sway? any help or suggestions as to what this sound could be would be greatly appreciated.
