How can I diagnose a power stage failure? 200 1987

On my 87 240 the engine hesitates during acceleration at higher rpms or under load. I don't think it is a fuel supply problem, but I may be wrong. It's a manual transmission and the shift indicator light (which never came on before) has all of a sudden decided to come on and stay on. I'd like to check out the power stage (although I'm still not sure what the real problem is). How can I test it? And where do you get one? It seems like a lot of the normal parts suppliers don't have them. Thanks!
