URGENT! HEATER CORE QUESTION-NEED BEFORE DARK 700 1988

well I have a new heater core in place and I noticed that the flaps or doors on the air box half I removed to expose were wet and already disenergating on both sides. I'm scraping clean and should I replace this or plug tiny holes the foam covered(whistling sounds or ...) or can I just reassemble as is? Also what kind of flexible sealant for the air box should be used to reassemble-WHATS THE BLACK GOO_ANYWAY? send pictures later and TIA mark

Bump
