I think they changed to save money.

With badges for 242, 244, 245, 262, 264, 265, they had to keep track of all those. Six different things, and if one type runs out, the other types don't help. Also making cars in quantities that are different that badge lots means that there will be too many of some, too few of another.

With DL and GL, the fit practically everything. With 240 they do fit everything. If one type runs out - well they're all the same type! Then they finally dropped the DL and GL, so the later models were just 240, and most had the standard GL stuff, like power windows, etc.

Still saves money, especially as the production runs got smaller and smaller.

That's my idea, anyway. FWIW.
