Orange versus red distributor cap for '83 245. Could red be the problem? 200 1983

I've done everything to get this beast going and still have no power after tuning, timing, replacing, resealing, refiltering, etc. It runs at idle nicely until you put it in gear at which point it coughs and sputters and either cuts off OR will move, but barely. NO POWER. I tried unplugging the air mass meter with no good results. COULD THIS BE A BAD OR WRONG DISTRIBUTOR CAP? This cap is red and my other Volvos have orange. I cannot remember where I bought the red cap from. Still frustrated in NC.
