what should i do about this car 200 1984

i bought a 1984 245ti (water cooled turbo) about 4 months ago and have gradually been fixing it up. the biggest problem i had thought was a sloppy front end, i replaced the tie rods, both inner and outer and am still getting shakes. i think its my rack and dont think i want to invest in a new one. the car is semi rusty, not terrible but not good, it has 166k and runs great. the car also has some driveshaft issues, i believe it needs u joints/center bearing. i dont want to spend a ton making this car a decent driver and feel like im getting in over my head on a car that was supposed to be a beater, should i get out while i still can? what do you think i would pay for a rack from a junkyard? and is this an extremely difficult job? any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
