I’m in the process of trying to fix a leaking fuel tank on my 1990 240 DL wagon.
Per Yama’s suggestion, I gained access to the bung nut on top of the fuel tank through the cargo area of the wagon.
Things don’t look too good. There is wetness all around the bung. The whole area is corroded including the 3 fuel lines coming from the bung. Two of these lines have rubber hoses connected to them. One of them is plugged off with a short rubber stopper.
I have cleaned the area as well as I could without making sparks using a wooden scraper and compressed air. Tonight before I closed up shop, I threw some kitty litter on the whole area to try to dry it up enough to see where the leak is.
I may compress the tank and put soapy water on the whole area tomorrow if the leak area isn’t obvious.
Stoney offered that POR-15 will seal any tank leaks at a seam. He has used it for gas, oil and diesel tank leaks as well as hydraulic supply tanks with success.
Trev29 offered that he has successfully patched gas tank holes with a gas tank repair epoxy stick.
I am hesitant to try to remove the bung if I do not have to since I don’t want to make more trouble by introducing dirt to my fuel system or just make other problems for myself. (you guys know how that goes don’t you?)
If I find that the leak is around the bung, I am tempted to clean up the whole area and smear it well with the POR-15 product. It’s not the most elegant solution but all I care is that it works long enough to get me through a few more miles.
I purchased the car new in 1989 and it is running as well as it ever has so I will likely do what it takes to get the tank leak stopped. I suppose I could go for a new bung or a good southern tank if I need to but I don’t want to go overboard.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
