Need help on buying a used volvo!!!

Hello everyone, i hope you all are having great holiday season.
I need to buy used car for my wife and was interested in volvo 960.
Reading this forum, suggestions and tips, its not very encouraging!
I did'ny have idea that volvo is that bad car, am i mistaking?
We like 960, its a nice looking car, nise zize, comfortable but reading about all these problems with porous engine blocks, failing trannys, etc.
I thought volvos were undestructable!
Anyway, am i just paranoid or? What would the best used volvo model be?
We live in sunny San Diego, California.
