HELP 1989 245.....temp gauge 200

wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me out:
i just bought a 1989 245DL w/146k, meticulously maintained, always serviced by volvo techs, bla bla bla. But the temp gauge never really rises above the 1/4 way point. sometimes takes about 10 minutes after driving before it really nudges up at all. noticed today while idling at a traffic light that she wanted to stall...threw it in 'p' and the sputtering stopped... was on my home so I parked it and hope that someone might shed light on it for me...
thanks in advance
