It's a short cut, using old Volvo namenclanture

The 100 and 200 series started out with intelligence in the numbers.

Digit #1 = Series
Digit #2 = Cylinders
Digit #3 = Doors.

So a 900 series with four cyinders and four doors could be tagged 944, rather than spelling out all those words.

The system broke down with the advent of the "Fancy" models, like GT and GLE and 760 with a 4-cylinder engine, and Diesel.

So you can call your 4-door 940 sedan a 944, or your 940 wagon a 945.

Regards,

Bob
