1988 240GL Brake Light question

First Happy New Year to all. For those that 2003 was great I hope it continues. For those that it was not so great I wish the best.

My daughter (1988 is her car) was getting ready to leave for a movie and we noticed her drivers side brake light was not working - a quick check and cleaning, after forcing her to take the soccer mom van, made it work. Now the bigger problem.

With the lights off the brake lights work - both the brake light and the tail light (inside on lens). When the lights are turned on the only brake light that works is the upper one in the rear window (the tail lights stay on). The car has the 'rear fog lights'(discovered what the switch does this evening)and with those on the driver's side tail light (inside) goes out - still no brake lights.

Any thoughts on what is causing this or how to trouble shoot it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again to all the brickboarders.
