strut problems 200

I haven't done struts yet on my car, but I will soon so I've been watching for posts about this operation. I read somewhere along the line that the top strut nut is not supposed to be tightened in such a way that might cause the strut to spin inside the strut itself. Apparently, the center threaded portion should be held and prevented from spinning while the top nut is tightened. With an air wrench, as soon as the nut tightens up the whole shaft inside the strut begins to spin. I read that this can wreck a new strut. (However, I witnessed one time a tire shop employee tighten that top nut just like you did, with an air wrench. He spun it a bunch of times before he was satisfied.) So I'm a bit confused on this. Again, I'm not speaking from experience here. I haven't even done any struts yet, but I'm sure I read this on the board one time. Hopefully some more experienced people will answer and either confirm or correct.
