Timing light -- enlighten me

My inlaws gave me a $100 gift card for Pep Boys for the holidays. I reckon it's time to buy a timing light and maybe a dwell/tach.

How much of a timing light do I need? They have the fancy digital advance ones, the inductive ones and the plain-old ones.

Is a dwell/tach essential? I have had decent luck adjusting new points with a regular feeler.

These are for use on a 73 145 and an 84 240.

I await the usual onslaught of wisdom.
