Electricals....1979 244GL 200

Okay...I've read a lot on this excellent site and have got to the rheostat, and managed one light to work. Its dim, but in the dark looks nice after darkness in central console area for 4 years!

1. Changed the speedo & some of the globes last week, and now that panel is in complete darkness! Did I (a) not check all replacement globes (all 2nd hand) or (b) Did I upset a little earth point?
2. The central console wiring has an L-shaped connector which seems to go nowhere....is that an auxiliary (white wiring both sides), as all seems to work?
3. Did the clock have a light on this model??
4. Still a smoker, my ciggy light has no positive wire....safe to cut in from a live radio wire operating via the ignition??
5. My "observation" (fusebox term) lights, those white little ones at first light switch position have stopped at the front only. Does that suggest another earth problem as there's no failure light running??

Thanks any guidance, Volvo friends.
