Surprise discovery on my 86 740GLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 700

Hello,

As most of us know the '86 740 non turbo came with the ZF22 Transmission. Mine has recently sprung a leak at the rear seal. I have found it difficult to find a bushing for it and much info on the difference between the preferred AW70.
I found myself really wishing I had the AW70 for which parts are plentifull.
While looking underneath I noticed that it had the rectangular tranny mount of an'87 Hmmm. I wiped all the fluid and grime off the pan too. When I was browsing parts online I also noticed that the AW70 pan gasket was square while the ZF22 was trapezoid shaped.
Wait a minute, wasn't the pan I saw under my Brick square shaped?? I checked the FAQ here and located the Model ID plate "on the left just above the pan." As the grime was wiped away, the words Aisen Warner became clearly visible and the model number 70. But my shifter is a ZF shifter with no overdrive button!!! I crawled back underneath and found where the overdrive solenoid had been capped off with a metal plate and some silicone. Have I not had a fourth gear all this time, or is is there some way that they converted it to work with the ZF shifter? Now I have to go and see. Needless to say, I'm happy to have he AW70 series and it has answered some questions about the car. When I bought it it was shifting 'way' too late and at high RPMS, slamming into gear. Back to the FAQ section. I attempted to adjust the cable but it was too short to adjust any further out! I had to rig up the bracket to get it adjusted right. It left me thinking if the tranny had beed replaced and the cable not installed right. Of course I know now that they used the cable from the ZF22 and that was why it was too short. Now, how hard would it be to put in the right shifter, and would it be possible, as an alternative, to reinstall another solenoid and just run the wire into the car and mount the button on the dash or somewhere else? Got to read the conversion FAQ. Has anyone done this before?
Thanks for any input.

P.S it looks like when they changed the Driveshaft, they may have left the old support bering in, since there seems to be alot of clearance between the shaft and the rubber bushing. The new shaft must have been of the smaller diameter I am thinking.
More clues, even as to why the output shaft bushing may have worn out?
