My chin spoiler was chipped and scratched up and before I mounted the salvage yard foglights I wanted to clean things up.
The easiest way to get at things is to remove the entire bumper.
There are three nuts on each bumper’s shock and two 10mm nuts at each end where the cover is secured to the side bumper sections.
Remove these 10 nuts and the entire bumper comes off. On mine, four of the six screws securing the spoiler to the bumper sheared off when turned. They thread into the aluminum bumper and were seized solid. Not even Pblaster worked.
With the spoiler off I sanded it with 300 then 600 grit paper, sprayed with 3 coats of primer, sanded between coats then used the Duplicolor Shadow Blue M (medium?). Perfect match to the dark blue (Atlantic Blue?) of the ’88 745t.
I could have used a little filler in the scratches before priming but didn’t bother this time. The result is excellent! With the fogs, tow hook cover and plastic air diverter thing in place it looks like a new car from the front. A clear coat, rubbed out would make it perfect.
Btw, short of drilling out the spoiler screws and using bolts & nuts to secure it, the only other option for an original mounting is find a new bumper. I drilled holes next to the broken screws and used nuts, bolts & washers and you’d never know it unless you got underneath and looked.
