Buying on Ebay (Spook?) 900

To Spook or anyone else with Ebay buying experienc.

I am interested in your insight on buying a car on Ebay. I assume that you did all the research on vin#, maintenance background/history, etc, prior to buying. Did you look at the car before you bought it? Did you buy from a private party or dealer/wholesaler? Right now, I am looking at three different sources: autotrader, ebay and cars.com as well as the local paper. Tomorrow I am going to post cards at the local volvo gagages in my town. I am willing to wait up to 6 months to find the right 940. I am a little hesitant to buy a 10yr old car on ebay without being able to see it, touch it, drive it. Should I stay away from dealers? Are private party ads better? How do you ensure you aren't buying a bomb? What is your experience?

Thanks,
Luke
