Hi Everyone,
I’m a regular visitor to the 900 forum, but this will be my first post of many in the 200 section. I am the proud new owner of a 1983 244 turbo that I bought for $300 last weekend. Now the daily driver Passat sits in the driveway and there are two Volvos in the garage- the way it should be. As you can guess, any $300 vehicle is going to have some issues- I plan to slowly go through the car over the next year and hopefully get it to the point where it’s a fun extra car for my wife and I (or a backup for when something goes horribly wrong while I’m working on one of the other two vehicles). I’ve spent the last few weeks reading posts & archives on 200 turbos and just got the Bentley manual. I’ve also purchased a book on Bosch Fuel Injection, hoping to learn a little more on K-jet and CIS. I have a couple of questions on items I’m working on right now:
1. The brake calipers and rotors are very rusted, although they seem to be functional. Would I be better off buying new calipers or rebuilding & repainting the existing ones?
2. Between the distributor and the thermostat, I have two vacuum hoses that aren’t connected. Both hoses go back 2-4” to the same “T” connection, which then runs back under the intake manifold and appears to go into the block. One of the unconnected hoses has a small cylinder connected in line that is about 11/2” in diameter and ¾” thick. It has “CARB” written on one side and “DIST” written on the other. I plan on replacing all the vacuum hoses I can get at, but I can’t figure out what these hoses are supposed to be connected to.
I also have an intercooler, but I want to get some of the more basic things taken care of before I tackle that project. Any other recommendations for going through these cars would be greatly appreciated. This is my first project car, but I have a lot more confidence going into it knowing that I can use a resource like the Brickboard. Thanks in advance for everyone’s help!
PS: I also want to mention what a pain it was to find a 240 turbo in the Midwest (Michigan). I looked for almost a year on Autotrader, IPD, Turbobricks, Brickboard, local classifieds between here and Chicago. I saw a total of 4 cars- 2 were completely rusted, 2 were in good shape, but were priced at $3000-$4000. My car was bought by the previous owner off of ebay from someone in Baltimore. You guys on the east and west coast are spoiled with your selection of 240 turbos!
