AIr Mass Meter? 200 1984

Hello all!

I appreciate the input on this one...

My wife and I are proud owners of a 1984 2.3 Gasoline 240 DL. It has over 200k on it and has been running strong since we bought it 60,000 miles ago. An occasional hesitation at highway speed has cropped up over the last 5,000 miles or so. Occurs 2 or 3 times every 400 miles. Just hesitates for a split second and continues on running. The wires and plugs I swapped provided no long term relief. But we could live with that condition for awhile, I am thinking it may be related to the below situation:

Tonight, as we left work (we work together), the Volvo would not start. I pulled the AMM plug off and she started right up, but I could smell fuel, as though she was flooding. She has very poor acceleration and serious hesitation at standing stop to 15 MPH. After that, she does okay. We "limped home" in that condition.

I am thinking it has to be the AMM, but am hoping for more folks opinions to be sure. If I leave the plug on the Air Mass Meter, the car refuses to stay started, choosing instead to cycle once or twice at high/low rev and then sputtering to a stop.

We appreciate greatly the advice, I know the AMM is the likely culprit, but if we are going to miss a day of work over this, I want to be sure its productive.
