Odd cold weather electrical glitch 700

It's been around 5 degrees F here in the Midwest for the past few days, during which I've experienced an odd electrical problem with my 1987 745GLE. To wit, first start up, as soon as I turn the headlights on the overdrive light comes on, the high beam light comes on, both turn signal lights come on, gas gauge drops to zero, tach drops, radio back light goes off. The head lights do come on. This has happened twice, last night and again this morning. I turned the lights off immediately, the other elements went back to normal. After a minute or so of running everything went back to normal, i.e., turned lights on and no issues. Haven't had a chance to look at a wiring diagram, but wondered if anyone had ever experienced this. Could this be a faulty headlamp relay? Is it actually wired in such a way this could occur? Or is it possibly a faulty headlamp switch?
