Voltage for 240 seat heaters 200 1991

I purchased what was advertised as 240 seat heater elements from e-bay to install in a leather seat upgrade in a GMC pick-up truck. Was told only necesary to hook up a switch in line(both pos. & neg.) to get them to work. Did so and I assume 12 volts fried the t-stats. I would like to know what is the proper voltage to feed the elements and do both pos. & neg. need to be switched. I still have continuity thru the wires (not thru the t-stat). What is used by Volvo to reduce the voltage from 12 volts to the proper amount? Any help is greatly appreciated.
