As stated in the other reply, you're going to be hard pressed to beat one of the Thule/Yakima style racks if you really want to use the darn thing. I have a Yakima rack on my 740 Twagon that has carried drywall, lumber, bikes, luggage, as well as, last month, our xmas tree!! So many attachments and accessory options available, a factory style rack just doesn't compare. Plus when you don't need it, it comes off and stores in the garage, and doesn't leave a mark on the car.

I know you said no to this style, but IMHO it's the only worthwhile option.
