compatible engines for transplant? '92 960 900 1992

Got the spousemobile in at the mechs, awaiting diagnosis and probable engine transplant; mech is pretty sure the engine was overheated by the P.O., resulting in increasing oil usage and eventual failure of compression in one cylinder. He's checking on a used engine--at least we may get out from under the '92's short timing belt cycle.
Anybody know which of the '93-98 engines will transplant with a relatively small amount of necessary changes in the peripherals, in case they call with a choice of several engines?
Yeah, I know it's not economical, but the car is in outstanding shape otherwise, and the wife loves it. I'd rather pay for something she loves and will use than, some conspicuous but essentially useless item.
