1992 945T Front Strut Replacement 900

Replaced the rear shocks and springs a few days ago, now I am getting ready to do the front struts. The Haynes manual indicates that the tie rod end has to come off. Is this going to require ball joint replacement. The ball joints were replaced at 80 or 90 thousand miles by the P.O., the car has 115K now, so I'd hate to have to replace them now as well. Does the tie rod end really have to be removed to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Steve C
