Engine temperature question 200

My engine temp. gauge would sporadically shoot up to redline without
the engine getting hot. Bypassing of the temperature gauge
compensator board fixed the problem. But, after bypassing the
board, the gauge needle only got up to 1/4 of the scale. Figuring
that it was time for a coolant change anyway, I drained the
coolant and removed the thermostat - it turned out to be an
82 deg. unit. According to the dealer, the recommended unit for
an '88 240 is rated at 92*C. I bought and installed the 92 deg.
thermostat, and filled up the engine with new antifreeze. The
car now runs the tiniest bit above the 9:00 position on the gauge
(9:15, maybe). Is this normal, or is my engine going to die
a nasty death soon? :) At least I have decent heat now...
