I need help. The problem and when it all started is this. I have a 88 740 2.3L non-turbo with a 140,000 miles on it. I have always done all the maintenance on it and have never neglected it. It happen today. I currently have just under a 1/2 tank of gas, and the outside temp is around 30 degrees. I drove the car to the doctors and it ran fine as always. While driving back home the engine started to make a lot of noise: valve rapping and rod knocking so badly you could hear it inside the car. As quickly as the noise appeared I lost power and you could smell burning oil inside the car. The car stalled when I had to stop for a light, so I put it in nuetral to keep it from stalling out. That made little difference but it stayed running. It seamed like I was running on 2 cylenders intill I got it up to speed. Going down hill with little load on the engine it almost ran as if nothing was wrong. I have not checked anything yet mainly because of the cold and my disability. I would like to hear from those of you that have had the same problem and what was done by you to make the repairs. I need to hear from another machanic and your thoughts on this problem. I am trying to skip all the tracking down and get it pin pointed with your past problems that are the same as mine. It is not that I am lazy but rather that I am totally physicly disabled and can't spend a lot of time bending or straining my neck or back because of my nerve damage. Please help if you can. Thanking you all in advance, Dan.
