Off hand I would say it was a bad idea to try to keep and engine from stalling with all that racket you described... who knows maybe you ran out of oil or something???? I know it's cold but...
Coudl the timing belt be jumping teeth?? Was it recently changed?
Is it possible some belt (accesory) came lose and caught caught i nthe action?
