Steering resistance in one direction 700 1991

There is a resistance when I turn the wheel to the right. As a result it is easier to turn left as it is to turn right However after the resistnce is overcome..usually within a third rotation of the wheel... ( with a light knocking sound coming seemingly from the right inner part of the rack) steering feel is ok. There is no fluid leak. I wonder what is coverd by the boot? Any suggestions as to what is happening...another thing is ..it is intermittent. It will be like this for a time then other times not. also seem to be more so in the mornings. Thanks
