Wheel noise - HELP pls!! 700

Hello Folks,

This knocking noise just started tonight near the front driverside wheel. The frequency of the knocking changes proportionally as the car speeds up or slows down and the noise goes away completely if I step hard on the brakes or turn left only. What could my problem be? This may be a hard one since I know that there are a lot of front susp/steering components in the front end, thanks for taking a stab at this since I don't want to drive the car if it is unsafe in this cond.

Tim

PS this problem is occuring on a 1989 - 744GL auto.
