bright lights cause engine to die 700

Hi all
Just replaced the voltage reg on 1988 740. The car previously was not charging.
Charged the battery for about an hour and removed the voltage regulator. One brush was too short and not making full contact. I purchased a new regulator and installed it. The car started right up thanks to the battery charge. I turned on the headlights and everything was fine. Then turned on the brights and engine died. Tried several times with the same result. Engine runs fine with beams on low. Did not notice lights changing in brightness with rpm increase/decrease. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Brad
