Modifying 2-1 downshifting on a BW35? Is it possible? 140-160

Hi, all. Here's a question that no doubt dates back decades -- but maybe someone knows? I've got a newly acquired '75 164 now, and one of only things that I never liked about my original '73, and this "new" one too, is that its BW35 doesn't (at least it always seemed, to me) allow a forced downshift from second to first (despite putting the shifter into "1") unless I'm almost completely, if not fully, stopped. I don't have to tell you folks that, given it's only a 3-speed, it's sometimes nice to be able to call upon 1st gear while still moving along a bit.
Now I know a manual would make this moot, but assuming that I'm sticking with the automatic...
So thinking back to the years when we all had BW35's (and long before the internet, of course), does anyone remember whether anyone ever had a solution? Cable adjustment, modifying the valve body (e.g., different springs, etc.), or any work-around to this limitation?
I'd appreciate any leads, and in advance, thanks to all.
