1988 240 DL Starts without Fuel Injection Relay or Fuses 4/6 200 1988

I was looking at a friend's car. He pulled the fuel injection relay (white and under the steering wheel) AND the fuses. The car still ran (and did so for at least five minutes. What's that about?
