Coolant smell from heater vent/minus 25 deg C (-13 F)outside,Heater core? 700 1990

14 yrs original heater core.
Minus 20-25 Celsius outside in Toronto.Northeaster in US too.Turned up heater fan speed.Smells slightly of coolant.Small leak in core?.What else is common in this vintage and weather? Can this be fixed with a stop leak product from say BArr or Prestone etc?or is the stop leak a stop-gap measure?FAQ says if its core,5 hrs labour!!!
Thanks
