Tachometer not working...

1986 740 GLE, B230F

I am familiar with the single red and white wire behind the gauges that is supposed to operate the tach. I'm not sure which one it is. There's one connector with TWO red and white wires that connects to the middle of the cluster. Then there's a single one that is part of a connector with about ten other wires.

COIL WIRING:
My coil has two wires (Green and White), Pos and Neg I presume. There is a little gray box beside the coil with a third wire. What is this? Second question: Where is this "red and white wire" supposed to go from the tach? Is it suppposed to be connected to the coil, because I only have the three I just mentioned.

BTW, the tach needle bounces very slightly as I turn the key on but that's all the life I've ever seen in it.
Thanks for the help in advance
