Your opinions please...If you have to bang a starter for it to work does that mean it should be replaced? 700 1990

Hello fellow bricksters one and all,
I had my 14 year old starter serviced a year ago, new brushes, etc. Now it was 5 degrees F. this morning and went to start the car and it clicked but didn't turn over. Battery is a brand new Interstate. I went into the house and grabbed my finish hammer and had my daughter turn the key. As soon as I rapped on the starter it turned over and the car started right up! I am thinking of replacing starter because I may end up someplace and not have a hammer with me... What do you think, fellow bricksters, is getting a starter to work in cold weather by banging it with a hammer a sign indicating you may want to replace it?
