Hello from the frozen north! (Massachusetts). Wanted to pass along some info to the group on a problem I had this weekend with my '90 245 not wanting to start.....
It has been about -5 up here the last few nights (didn't go above 8 degrees here all day yesterday) and I had a few "crank-no-start" incidents. The car would crank fine, but wouldn't fire. You really get to know a car after 14 years and I noticed I didn't hear the fuel pump doing its momentary whine when I turned the key. (The fuel pump will cycle for about 4 seconds when you trun the key. If you don't continue turning the key to "start" it cycles off again.) Anyway, sure enough, I heard the usual faint "click" out there somewhere, but no fuel pump running. After cycling the key about 4 times, the pump finally came alive/on and "vrooom!"...she started right up. This happened a few times over the weekend. This morning it was up to a more "balmy" 12 degrees and everything was back to normal. Figure it's probably the ice cold main relay causing the problem.
Just wanted to pass it along! If you have a problem like this, listen for the main pump! If you don't hear it spinning up, cycle the key a few times and it should come to life. We're going back down below zero again mid-week...we'll see if the problem returns.
Take care,
GO PATS!
