Gas Gauge / Tank Sender Question 200

Greetings,

I have a quick question in relation to my gas gauge that recently stopped working. I *think* I've narrowed the problem down to the connection at the tank sending unit.

I popped the gas tank inspection cover off in the trunk of my '84 240 DL and played around with the wire going into the tank. The gas gauge went from not working to reading slightly. I'm assuming it's not reading more b/c the connection is dirty and there is thus resistance.

The wire has a white plastic plug/connector going into the top of the tank... can I pop this wire off to clean the contact/connection where it enters the top of the tank or will I risk breaking it? Is there a trick to remove it?
Is this wire solely for the gas gauge? (It's a carb B21 if that makes a difference).

Thanks,

Jaak
