Alternative Switch for O/D - What type of switch to use? 200

Greetings,

while poking around doing a "o/d switch" search I came across the following comment from a few years ago...

"My winter beater '85 has the o/d switch in the dash. I used a momentary-type rear defrost button"

Can someone please explain how the overdrive works?
ie. you hit the switch and the following happens...

What happens when you downshift and the overdrive is still accidentally engaged?

I've seen 544's with a toggle over-drive switch, so I'm not sure what type of switch to use. Ie. momentary vs. on/off.

Thanks in advance,

Jaak
