hmmmm....no start 200 1984

ok, so this maybe a repetitive topic on this board but i've spent the past 2 days sifting through the posts and am still feeling left in the dark. My problem started the other day, i went to start my wagon before work and when i turned the key i got nothing, no click, nothing and as i turned the key my ;dome lights went out. Well not completely out there was a faint glimmer of light, but anyway i immediately dug into the wiring as i had already discovered the horror of biodegradeable insulation at my alternator. i found that the 25 amp fuse holder by the battery also disintegrates, so that was replaced. Now however my dilema is i have a engine that turns over but does not fire. I ve jumped the #4&6 fuses and heard the whirring of the fuel pump and am set to check for spark. WHAT I need is a proper way to do this without specialty tools and any other helpful tips you volvofiles out there can provide.
