stamp in top of B20E block? 1800

I have a B20E, from a '70 E. On the top of the block, on the smooth head mounting surface, by each cylinder, opposite the spark plug side, there is a "C" stamped into the cast iron.

On all but cylinder #4, the "C" appears to have been crossed out with an "X" stamp, and a "D" has been stamped in, adjacent to the crossed out "C".

Any idea what this mark indicates(ed)?
