How do I cut metal in my A/T Overdrive solenoid to turn it 'always on'? 200 1983

In response to an earlier question of mine, Don Foster suggested that it might be possible to mechanically alter my 1983 240 Auto Trans overdrive solenoid such that I would have O/D "Always on" (and thus forget about the whole relay / wiring degradation issue altogether).

See earlier post: http://brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=736583

Anyone out there actually done this and can provide some pointers on tools used, time taken to do this, etc? Am I better off just buying a new solenoid ($200) and installing it / getting someone to install it?

Thanks Don!
