86 automatic disengage 4th gear sticks 200 1986

i have an automatic 1986 240 dl and on the shift knob there is a button that disengages 4th gear. on the instrument panel there is a light that looks like an arrow that comes on when this button is pushed. On my car this light remains on even when you hit the button to turn it off and the car does not shift into 4th gear. If i continuously push the button for a while sometimes it finally shifts into 4th gear. but this does not work all the time. does anyone know what could cause this to stick and how to fix it?
