putting a turbo engine in a n/a car

You basically will need everything from the Turbo.
You'll need the engine and trans (well, you could use whatever's in the 85 for a transmssion, but the AW71 in the Turbo is stronger).
You need the entire engine wiring harness, computers, intercooler, and air hoses from the Turbo.
It's not a bad fit in a 240- the distance from bellhousing to radiator is the same as a 240, and the 740 intercooler fits fine, the radiator is the same, so you just need the longer brackets of the Turbo to hold everything together up front. You need to swap the mounts to 240 style. The 740 may have an oil cooler, which you'll have to add into the stack of condenser-intercooler-radiator.
Your primary problem to overcome will be the placement of the distributor. The 740 has the dist on the back of hte head. The 240 has it in the block. The 740 dist won't fit in the 240 body- no clearance at the firewall. You have to pull out the 740 dist, and install the 240 cam plug. Then you've got to put the 240 distributor in the hole on the block, where presently there is a steel plug. The drive is there for it- but the shaft must be timed properly. Correct orientation is shown in the Haynes book for 240's. Electrically the 240 dist must be connected to the 740 plug- I think this will plug right in but you need to verify this. You need to use the 85-88 240 dist, so you already own the right one.
It's not a simple project but it certainly can be done. The result is a fast, fun sleeper of a car.
My friend has a running driving example of a 89 244GL powered by a 91 940T drivetrain. Have fun!
