How to remove valve shims??? 700

I am in the middle of checking and adjusting my valve lash clearances (or whatever they are called) and three out of four of the pairs of valves have at least one at .020" (they are supposed to be between .018 and .016), while two valves are at .014. Is this sufficiently out of spec to change them? I actually have to change 7 out of 8 valves, I believe (one is at .018).

This is the adjustment due after the valve job/head gasket replacement that I had done in June.

I have the IPD kit and shim removal tool, but I'll be darned if I can get the shims to come out without picking at them and the cam in a way that might scratch them. How does one do this w/o the special Volvo tool? I have heard someone say they use compressed air but I don't have a compressor.

Funny how these simple jobs end up being difficult in the most unexpected ways, isn't it? Thanks for the help, everyone. I always appreciate your support.
