PS Pisses Me Off! 200 1985

I bought this car in 12/2002, immediately changed all fluids, and have driven it about 3,000 miles over the past year. I happened to check the power steering fluid today, and it looked like chocolate milk! I flushed and replaced the power steering fluid, which is now a nice red color (my manual calls for Type F ATF, which I used and use). I expected to change the power steering fluid every two years, just to be cautious, but now I'm confused and worried that I'm not doing it frequently enough. How long does power steering fluid normally last?
