RWD diesel transmission question

hello. I'm a VW guy and had some questions about the 1980's diesel Volvos sold in the USA. I think if I remember correctly that VW supplied Volvo with some diesel motors am I correct in thinking this?

If correct were any of these motors connected to rear wheel drive trannys?

Is the bell housing pattern on these trannys the same as other volvo trannys or is it an odd ball and a vw pattern?

The reason I'm asking is because my friend and I always come up with odd ball swap questions for wierd what ifs and today I'm trying to think about what rear drive tranny I can use in a TDI tacoma Pickup hybrid. I know there is samuri VW tranny converson but I'd like diesel gearing. So if you know the answers I'd love some insight. Thanks. Frank
