Pondering a 740 wagon for the wife... 700

What I know so far: 740 Sport Wagon - 1990 - 138,000 miles - 1 owner - service records - auto trans - cloth seats

So far I have only made a very cursory-glance kind of inspection, but it looked quite clean with no obvious rust and new rubber.

They are asking $3500, which seems insane to me.

I was planning to investigate further, and I will not buy without a mechanic's inspection.

But I'd like to know a ballpark $ figure to make a counteroffer. I certainly don't want to pay for a mechanic's inspection if they are going to stick to that selling price.

Also, I generally do not know much about this model. Should I anticipate a lot of trouble and shop time? Is it likely to be fairly reliable? I am not looking for a project car to work on a lot myself - don't have time for that any more. It would be nice to have a wagon for a second car, though.

I'll look at the inspection points listed in the FAQ for sure. Any other ideas, opinions, things to look for in these cars?
