Reverse Quells Curse 200

I have a 87 240 wagon that has had an sputtering/stalling/periodic lack o' gas problem since I've owned it. Changed the AMM, cleaned the 25 amp fuse, checked the other fuses, checked the fuel pump relay, wire harness seems okay, put in two new fuel pumps. Now the problem seems now non-intermittent, meaning it happend every time I started the car tonight (used to only occur every 15 miles or so and would be "cured" by shutting off the car). I just noticed tonight (when I could barely go 30 MPH) that the car didn't sputter when in reverse. Hmmmm. Any ideas regarding why this might be so? Does this fact give anyone an idea regarding what the source of my (now very severe) sputtering problem may be?
John
