Help!! Tune Up went horribly wrong! (91 740)

A friend of mine brought his college son's 740 (B230F) over and said it was running rough. It was. But it did get there. I cleaned the flame trap (stopped up completely with oil all over ever thing), throttle body (worst I have ever seen), changed the dist. cap, rotor button, and plugs. He claimed he had changed the wires a few years back.

It started up but it was missing. Tried to put it in gear and it backfired, shook, and died. Took the dist cap back off and r and r the button. Still it was missing and random back firing. Took off the throttle body again and made sure the gasket was seated. Still it was missing and backfire.

I have looked for anything I might have taken off and not replaced. Checked the fuel pressure reg for smell of gas in the vacumn. Neither seemed to be bad.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I dont need another push car here and the boy needs his car. Now I feel responsible since it was running (although not well) when it got here.

thanks in advance.
