Trany problem 700 1989

My mom owns an 89 740 GLE with the 16 valve engine :( , I believe there is something very wrong with its auto tranmission. When you are driving normally, it clunks fairly hard when it shifts, and the car lerches forward, (when i floor it i can actaully chirp the tires going into second on dry pavement), it is really irritating when i just want to drive over to the convience store, i swear i have developed whiplash from driving it over the years! My mom says that it has shifted rough since new, and it never got any better or worse so she didnt look into getting it fixed. Any ideas on what is causing this? Is there anything I can do (besides a transmission rebuild) to minimize this clunk?
thanks
